A new landmark is taking shape in Nantes as the extension of the Anne-de-Bretagne Bridge prepares to open to the public. After an extraordinary 3,000-kilometre journey across the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Atlantic seas, passing through the Strait of Gibraltar, the structure has finally reached its destination.
Pedestrians and cyclists first, motorists to follow
The project has faced several challenges along the way, including delays caused by difficult weather conditions. However, the bridge extension arrived in Nantes and was successfully installed in March, bringing the city one step closer to its reopening.
The next milestone is just days away. From Friday, 23 October, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access the new nine-metre-wide structure and enjoy its redesigned surroundings. Drivers will need to wait until late November, when the bridge is expected to open to car traffic. Vehicles will initially travel in one direction, from south to north, before two-way traffic is restored in March 2027.
